Gas regulators, flow-meters, and suction valves, which are intended to be connected pressure regulators for the administration of medical gases, must meet the specification requirements of the Australian Standard. Confirmation that these devices are performing

accurately, reliably and within manufacturer’s specifications is a requirement for users of medical gases.

Frequently asked questions and answers

Q. How often does my equipment need to be tested?

A. The assessment should include, manufacturers recommended intervals, impact and likelihood of failure, experience with similar equipment, level of usage, statutory requirement, and service history. Typically, it is industry standard to test devices at least annually.

Q. What tests are normally performed during service?

A. Physical damage, testing of zero point, leak test, regulator performance test, pressure relief valve operation, flow across the range. Seals and filters are replaced on an annual basis, and regulator seat on a 3 year basis.

Q. What happens if my equipment fails the test?

A. U-Tech Medical will advise the corrective action and the cost if repair is needed.

Q. Do I need to purchase a copy of the Australia Standards?

A. This is not required, however if you prefer to keep a copy, it is available on-line at: and type “AS/NZS 3840.1” in the search window. Other standards may also be downloaded by typing the required code.
